The recurring theme in Lüstraeten's works is the presentation of the human need for security. Particularly in the United States, this need takes on rather bizarre forms, which the artist documents. In the “American Angst” series, Lüstraeten shows the viewer the absurd excesses of what could almost be considered pathological behaviour, known to many under the term “American angst” – namely exaggerated caution regarding all uncertainties. This is a type of behaviour that the normally risk-oriented Americans have only adopted over the past few years.
